The 2024 Shanghai International Sister Cities Youth Camp, hosted by the Putuo District Education Bureau, took place in Shanghai from July 3 to 16. Under the theme “Communication, Cooperation, Friendship, and Understanding,” the camp attracted 89 young participants from 16 countries, promoting cultural exchange and mutual understanding.

Diverse Cultural Activities

The camp featured a wide range of activities, including traditional Chinese culture courses, visits to iconic landmarks, and practical projects on city design. Participants engaged in martial arts, porcelain carving, New Year paintings, tie-dyeing, lantern making, and Chinese Hanfu experiences to immerse themselves in the rich cultural heritage of China.

The youths visited notable urban landmarks such as the Oriental Pearl Tower, the Huangpu River, Yu Garden, and the Half Marathon Suzhou Creek Park. These excursions provided insights into Shanghai’s cultural evolution and modern development.

The camp included visits to prominent institutions such as universities, the Shanghai Museum, and the Shanghai Astronomy Museum. Participants also took part in youth forums and interactive activities at the Oriental Land, fostering a deeper understanding of academic and cultural facets of the city.

Personal Reflections

Brian O’Carroll from Ireland highlighted his enriched understanding of Chinese culture and the warmth of Shanghai’s people, stating, “The endless kindness of the people of Shanghai will be forever engraved in my heart.” Similarly, Sarah from Marseille, France, expressed her eagerness to share her experiences, describing Shanghai as a journey “as picturesque as a poem.”
