Seabourn, a leader in ultra-luxury voyages and expedition travel, named its newest expedition ship, Seabourn Pursuit, in a historic ceremony on June 29, 2024, at Ngula Jar Island, Australia. This event marked the first time a ship was named by Traditional Owners, the Wunambal Gaambera people. Guests participated in the ceremony aboard Zodiacs while the ship’s crew lined the decks, celebrating the unique cultural event.
Celebrating Wunambal Gaambera Culture
The day-long event honored the Wunambal Gaambera Country and people. Guests experienced a traditional “jimɨrri” smoking ceremony to ensure safe travels and participated in the “Junba,” a storytelling song and dance performed by Wunambal Gaambera Traditional Owners. Attendees also visited ancient rock art sites and viewed artworks by Wunambal Gaambera artists, available for purchase.

Strengthening Cultural and Sustainable Partnerships
Seabourn and Wunambal Gaambera Traditional Owners exchanged gifts to celebrate their new relationship. Seabourn guests Vince and Jane Roig, who have sailed on every inaugural voyage of Seabourn’s current fleet, presented the Traditional Owners with art supplies. The ceremony culminated with the naming of Seabourn Pursuit in both Wunambal Gaambera language and English, using a bottle crafted from sugar and sand from Ngula Jar Island, adhering to maritime tradition.
Seabourn President Natalya Leahy expressed excitement about the partnership, highlighting the alignment of Seabourn’s values with the Wunambal Gaambera’s rich cultural heritage and sustainable tourism efforts. Catherine Goonack, Chair of the Wunambal Gaambera Aboriginal Corporation, emphasized the importance of sharing their culture and maintaining their health by living and working on their land.
Investment in Sustainable Tourism
The Kimberley region was chosen for the naming ceremony to reflect Seabourn Pursuit’s intended purpose and to establish a sustainable relationship with the Wunambal Gaambera community. Seabourn’s partnership includes a donation to support the development of a self-sustaining industry for Wunambal Gaambera artists. Seabourn is also providing pearl shells, art supplies, and polishing materials to foster year-round commercial arts and crafts initiatives.
