Hera Lee, Executive Director of 798CUBE, emphasizes the exhibition’s alignment with the institution’s commitment to exploring the intersections of cutting-edge art and technology. The exhibit aims to immerse visitors in Kim’s visionary concept of “matterReality,” inviting them to experience the cosmic infinity and unravel the perpetual enigma of polarity.
Curator Zhang Ga describes Kim as a modern alchemist and physicochemical provocateur. Zhang highlights Kim’s ability to blend ancient techniques with modern scientific concepts, creating a reality that transcends human sensory perception. The exhibition includes “Triaxial Pillars II,” a liquid furnace that transforms metal particles and sand into a fluid gyre, and “La Poussière de Soleils II,” a work that showcases boiling mineral particles in a hexagonal glass container.
Kim’s artistic journey is further illuminated through his piece “Strata,” which explores material verity beyond human perception, and “Remnant Vitrine,” a miniature laboratory showcasing the alchemist’s archive of unconventional objects.
As both a visual artist and an accomplished musician, Kim also constructs devices that produce electronically acoustic music, exemplified by his turntable-styled instrument, “C-Ray.”
Yunchul Kim’s exhibition at 798CUBE is presented by Beijing 798 Culture and Technology Co., Ltd., and runs from May 25 to October 13, 2024. Visitors to the 798 Art District can explore this unique convergence of art and science, experiencing a world where cosmology meets microphysics in a harmonious blend of creativity and technological innovation.
