The newly expanded main terminal at Portland International Airport (PDX) opened to passengers on August 14, marking a significant milestone in the airport’s evolution. Designed by ZGF for the Port of Portland, the one million square foot expansion doubles PDX’s capacity, enabling it to serve 35 million passengers annually by 2045.
A key feature of the terminal is its 9-acre mass timber roof, the largest of its kind, which draws inspiration from the Pacific Northwest’s natural beauty. The design, which includes views of the airfield, abundant natural light, and interior landscapes, creates an environment that feels like walking through a forest.

“The new main terminal is a testament to the vision of our incredible client, the Port of Portland,” said Sharron van der Meulen, ZGF Managing Partner. The expansion was achieved without building a new terminal, thanks to a phased renovation and expansion strategy that kept the airport operational, saving time, costs, and carbon.
The terminal’s sustainable design, highlighted by its use of locally sourced wood and a ground-source heat pump system, reduces energy use by 50% per square foot while significantly increasing capacity. The project sets a new benchmark for airport design, with the second phase expected to complete in early 2026.
