North Dakota Tourism has unveiled the 2024 ND Sunflower Trail, showcasing over a dozen vibrant sunflower fields set to reach peak bloom from late July through August. This trail offers a picturesque journey through the state’s thousands of acres of sunflowers, turning the landscape into a sea of sunny yellow hues.

“The state’s sunflower growers are eager to partner with North Dakota Tourism on this field guide program and share a little of what makes North Dakota unique with others,” said Josh Greff, a sunflower grower in southwest North Dakota. “There’s really nothing like seeing a field full of vibrant yellows when the sunflowers reach their peak color. Helping visitors to have a legendary experience is a valuable opportunity for growers to support both the tourism and agriculture industries in North Dakota.”

For those planning to witness this spectacular bloom, the sunflower map provides updated locations for optimal viewing. North Dakota Tourism will refresh the map weekly to ensure visitors can find the most vibrant fields during their trip.

Sunflowers have deep roots in North Dakota, introduced by Ukrainian immigrants who settled in the state via the Homestead Act of 1867. These bright flowers have been a significant part of Ukraine’s economy and cultural heritage, and they now thrive in North Dakota’s fields.

Photographers and sunflower enthusiasts are encouraged to explore the fields across the state and capture the stunning blooms. Tips for a perfect photo include:

  • Respecting landowners and avoiding entering or driving into the fields.
  • Arriving early to scout locations for the best golden hour shots, 1-2 hours after sunrise or before sunset.
  • Taking advantage of cloudy days, which often provide the best conditions for close-up shots.

To celebrate National Sunflower Day on Saturday, August 3, visitors can share their sunflower photos on social media using #NDLegendary and #NDFieldFinders. North Dakota Tourism has also partnered with growers to place mailboxes with free, edible sunflower seeds at several field locations.

For detailed information on field locations, seed availability, and bloom updates, visitors can check out the North Dakota Sunflower Trail Guide. Additional resources, including sunflower recipes, videos, and facts, are available at Brighten Your Day with the Amazing Sunflower.
