Natural Bridge Wildlife Ranch (NBWR) has welcomed the birth of Rudy, a male southern white rhino, marking a major milestone in its conservation efforts. Born to Gertie and Kutu on September 2, 2024, Rudy is the second rhino calf born at the ranch in less than a year, following his half-sister Truda’s arrival in November 2023.
“Rudy represents hope for the preservation of southern white rhinos,” said Tiffany Soechting, NBWR’s Animal Husbandry Director. “With Truda turning one and Rudy’s playful energy inspiring us, our breeding program is making strides in helping this vulnerable species.”

Southern white rhinos, classified as near-threatened by the IUCN, face significant threats from illegal poaching. Conservation efforts like NBWR’s breeding program are vital for reversing population declines. NBWR has worked with global experts and obtained permits to import rhinos from South Africa and Namibia, including Rudy’s mother, Gertie, in 2021. Recently, two additional females, Agnes and Cora, were introduced to the ranch.
Less than 30 U.S. zoological facilities have successfully bred southern white rhinos, making NBWR’s achievements significant. The ranch’s team collaborates internationally on rhino health practices and anti-poaching measures, including satellite tagging in South Africa.
Guests visiting NBWR can witness the growing rhino crash and learn about its integral role in global conservation. Home to over 800 animals across 450 acres, the ranch remains committed to educating the public about endangered species and supporting wildlife preservation worldwide.
