A survey by Mazda reveals 93% of Americans prefer road trips, with scenic views, adventure, and flexibility being top reasons. SUVs, comfort, and tech features are essential for travelers.

A recent survey conducted by Optimal on behalf of Mazda reveals that road trips remain a beloved American tradition, with 93% of Americans expressing a preference for traveling by car.

The survey, which included over 2,500 participants, highlights the appeal of road trips for their scenic views (82%), sense of adventure (71%), and flexibility to stop and explore (71%).

Mazda conducted the survey to better understand road travel preferences and enhance the design of its vehicles to create unforgettable on-road experiences. The findings underscore the importance of the journey itself, with drivers valuing driving pleasure (58%) and bonding time (57%).

Popular Destinations and Vehicle Choices

As summer approaches, 68% of Americans plan to embark on road trips, with Florida (23%), California (17%), and Georgia (13%) emerging as top destinations. The beach (54%) is the most popular destination, followed by visits to family and friends (39%), trips to the mountains (36%), and national parks (35%).

Comfort and space are crucial considerations for travelers. The survey found that 2-row SUVs or crossovers (31%), such as Mazda’s new 2025 CX-70, are the most popular, followed by 3-row SUVs or crossovers (20%) like the 2024 CX-90, and sedans (20%).

Essential Features for Road Travel

When choosing a vehicle for road trips, respondents prioritized comfort and smart organization. Key features include comfortable seats (85%), ample storage compartments (50%), and interior cargo capacity (44%). Mazda’s design philosophy emphasizes these needs, with seats that conform to the body’s natural posture and are upholstered in luxurious Nappa leather, available in models like the CX-90 and CX-70.

Technology also plays a vital role in enhancing the road trip experience. Essential tech features identified by respondents include in-car GPS navigation (73%), smartphone connectivity (58%), USB ports (51%), security systems (42%), and tire pressure monitoring systems (42%).

Safety features such as reversing cameras (67%), blind spot monitoring (56%), and collision warning (47%) are also top priorities. Mazda’s i-ACTIVSENSE® technology, included in all new vehicles, addresses these needs with comprehensive safety features.
