Jamaica Triumphs as Host of Caribbean Travel Marketplace 42
Jamaica’s hosting of the Caribbean Hotel and Tourism Association’s (CHTA) premier sales event, Caribbean Travel Marketplace 42, from May 20-23, has been lauded as “a resounding success” by Minister of Tourism, Hon. Edmund Bartlett.
The event attracted around 1,200 delegates from over 45 countries. Minister Bartlett expressed his satisfaction, stating, “We’re very pleased with the response from our suppliers and buyers alike, also the countries in the region that have made this great event successful, meaningful, and the largest staging ever.”
Highlighting the robust turnout, he noted that Caribbean Travel Marketplace 42 saw over 12,750 scheduled appointments, with many parties exploring contract signings. He remarked that this level of engagement signifies the full post-COVID-19 recovery of tourism in the region.
Held at the Montego Bay Convention Centre, the event provided a platform for introducing new ideas, sharing best practices, and mutual support within the industry.
Emphasizing the vital role of tourism in the Caribbean’s economy, Minister Bartlett pointed out that most islands are heavily reliant on tourism, with the sector accounting for well over 40% of their GDP. He noted that tourism is the primary source of employment and foreign exchange, driving significant portions of regional investments.
Minister Bartlett stressed the importance of enhancing the skills of the local workforce and creating effective platforms to showcase regional assets. “Marketplace is a great opportunity for that,” he said.
CHTA President Nicola Madden-Greig echoed these sentiments, praising Jamaica’s hosting efforts and noting that feedback had been exceptional. She highlighted new additions to the 42nd Marketplace, including the first-ever MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions) groups exchange with a special itinerary for meeting planners.
The event also featured the first multi-destination fam trip, promoting regional tourism by showcasing how visitors can enjoy multiple Caribbean destinations in one trip.
Madden-Greig noted the improved airlift connections linking St. Lucia, Barbados, Jamaica, and the Cayman Islands, which are helping to facilitate regional tourism growth.
She emphasized the high demand for Caribbean tourism and the need for readiness to capitalize on investment opportunities. “We have to build out the right product, continue to offer the right experiences, engage the local community, and ensure that tourism works for everyone,” she said.
Both Minister Bartlett and Madden-Greig commended the efforts of the organizations and individuals who contributed to the event’s success. Caribbean Travel Marketplace, the region’s premier trade event, was hosted jointly by the Jamaica Tourist Board (JTB) and the CHTA, in collaboration with various tourism partners.
