Four Seasons Resort Maui Launches Blue ʻĀina Initiative for Ocean Conservation

In celebration of National Oceans Month, the renowned Five-Star, Five-Diamond Four Seasons Resort Maui at Wailea has introduced the Blue ʻĀina guest experience, a new addition to its Mālama Hawaiʻi program. This initiative aims to foster ocean conservation and environmental stewardship among guests, reflecting the Resort’s commitment to regenerative travel and sustainability.

Blue ʻĀina: A Commitment to Ocean and Land

The term “Blue ʻĀina,” meaning “Blue Land,” signifies the connection between land and sea, emphasizing the responsibility to protect the environment. This ethos is central to the Four Seasons Resort Maui, situated along the picturesque Wailea Beach.

Educational and Interactive Experience

The Blue ʻĀina program, in collaboration with Kaukolu Project, involves monthly reef clean-ups starting with a land-based clean-up at Maʻalaea Harbor. Guests then embark on a snorkeling and reef clean-up excursion aboard Trilogy’s vessel, enjoying a breakfast and lunch during the trip. This initiative not only helps maintain Maui’s reefs but also educates guests on ocean conservation and fosters a deeper connection with the local community.

The program costs USD 60 per guest, with the Resort offering a USD 250 resort credit per participating room. Blue ʻĀina complements the Resort’s coastal debris monitoring and clean-up efforts with the Pacific Whale Foundation.

Sustainability Manager Taylor Fujimoto expressed enthusiasm for the initiative: “It’s an exceptional opportunity for guests seeking to deepen their relationship with Maui’s natural beauty and vibrant community.”

Additional Environmental Initiatives

Beyond Blue ʻĀina, Four Seasons Resort Maui is dedicated to various environmental initiatives:

Surfrider Foundation Certification

The Resort’s restaurants, including DUO Steak and Seafood and Ferraro’s Restaurant & Bar, are certified as Ocean Friendly Restaurants by the Surfrider Foundation. This certification recognizes efforts to combat plastic waste, which poses a significant threat to marine ecosystems.

Keālia Pond Restoration Project

Since November 2023, Resort employees have been involved in the Keālia Pond Restoration Project, collaborating with the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service to restore native wetland environments for the endangered Nene Goose. This project helps filter pollutants and supports marine habitats.

Project Reef Collaboration

The Resort partners with Project Reef, providing complimentary reef-safe sunscreens to guests. These products protect marine ecosystems and promote awareness about the harmful effects of chemical sunscreens on the ocean.

Composting Initiative

Launched on May 1, 2024, the Resort’s new composting program aims to divert food waste from landfills, reduce methane gas production, and create valuable soil amendments for the local community. This initiative, in partnership with West Maui Green Cycle Composting, positions the Resort as a leader in environmental stewardship.
