A new study from Upgraded Points identifies the U.S. airports where travelers lose the most time due to delays, long taxi-out times, and extended layovers. Using data from the Bureau of Transportation Statistics and Google Flights, the study highlights where travelers can expect the longest—and shortest—waits.
Miami International Airport (MIA) ranked as the top “time drainer,” with travelers losing nearly an hour on average (47.1 minutes) between delays and tarmac waits.

San Francisco (SFO) and Dallas Fort Worth (DFW) followed, with total average wasted times of 41.3 and 37.9 minutes, respectively. New York’s LaGuardia (LGA) was noted for having the longest taxi-out time, averaging 23 minutes.
Conversely, Kahului Airport (OGG) in Maui topped the list for efficiency, with travelers experiencing only 16.2 minutes of delay, followed closely by San José International Airport (SJC) and Houston Hobby (HOU).
“Understanding which airports tend to cause delays can help travelers prepare better and reduce frustration,” said Upgraded Points Editor-in-Chief Keri Stooksbury.
