The Oriental Pearl Tower celebrates its 100 millionth visitor with a special ceremony and the unveiling of the ‘SHANGHAI’ art installation, showcasing the city’s dynamic global appeal.

SHANGHAI — On September 29, 2024, the Oriental Pearl Tower, a defining icon of Shanghai’s skyline, celebrated a major milestone by welcoming its 100 millionth visitor. The landmark achievement underscores the tower’s enduring appeal and Shanghai’s status as a top international tourism destination.

Peter Baur, a retired German teacher, became the 100 millionth visitor, receiving a commemorative certificate from Deputy Mayor Liu Duo and a miniature replica of the tower from Fang Shizhong, Deputy Director of the Publicity Department of Shanghai Municipal Committee of CPC. Baur expressed his gratitude for the recognition and praised Shanghai’s views and cultural diversity, promising to return.

To mark the occasion, the tower unveiled the ‘SHANGHAI’ pop-up installation, a vibrant art piece by Tore Claesson, designed to symbolize the city’s dynamism and leadership in technology and business. The installation has already become a popular photo spot, showcasing Shanghai’s international appeal and urban culture.

This celebration coincides with Shanghai’s broader tourism growth, which saw over 3 million international visitors in the first half of 2024, a 140% increase from the previous year. To maintain this growth, the city has introduced more than 120 curated travel itineraries, further solidifying its place as a top destination.

The Oriental Pearl Tower’s 30th anniversary celebrations will continue with events and activities aimed at delighting visitors and enhancing Shanghai’s global tourism profile.
