Royal Caribbean Group hosted a Decarbonization Summit, gathering over 70 maritime leaders to discuss technology, alternative fuels, and policy, advancing the industry’s path to net zero.

In a concerted effort to advance decarbonization within the maritime and cruise industry, over 70 maritime leaders convened at a Decarbonization Summit hosted by Royal Caribbean Group (NYSE: RCL) in partnership with the Mærsk Mc-Kinney Møller Center for Zero Carbon Shipping. The summit focused on developing technology, exploring alternative fuel opportunities, and discussing policy and regulation to achieve net zero emissions.

“Achieving net zero is not something any one company can do alone – it requires collective problem solving, creative thinking, and a willingness to have tough conversations,” said Jason Liberty, president and CEO of Royal Caribbean Group. “This week we have put steps in place to catalyze an open dialogue that will foster the thinking necessary to develop an environment where net zero is attainable and sustainable.”

The summit concluded with three key areas for advancement to help the industry collaborate effectively to achieve net zero within the next 25 years:

  1. Technology Development: Participants discussed the need for an independent platform to share important findings from pilot and testing programs across the maritime industry.
  2. Alternative Fuels: There was a call for the creation of a third-party platform to aggregate low-carbon fuel demand by location, providing insights to better prepare the industry for the supply of alternative fuels.
  3. Policy and Regulation: The summit emphasized the development of a set of principles outlining critical policy actions needed to support the industry’s decarbonization goals, aimed at informing the International Maritime Organization (IMO).

Bo Cerup-Simonsen, CEO of the Mærsk Mc-Kinney Møller Center for Zero Carbon Shipping, highlighted the summit’s significance: “The shipping industry is in a critically important phase where the pathway to a sustainable future is now being shaped by concrete plans and actions. The cruise industry faces its own needs and opportunities on the road to decarbonization but also holds a lot of valuable insights that can benefit the rest of the maritime industry. With this event, Royal Caribbean Group demonstrates exemplary first mover leadership by taking responsibility beyond their own agenda, fostering important in-depth discussions, collaboration, knowledge sharing, and action across the ecosystem to further strengthen the acceleration towards a decarbonized maritime industry.”
