The report highlights significant contrasts in vacation habits around the world:

  • Japan: Japanese workers, who take an average of 11 days off, have the lowest vacation deprivation levels at 53%. They tend to take more frequent short vacations, prioritizing relaxation.
  • France: French workers enjoy the most vacation days, averaging 29 annually. Vacations are culturally seen as a fundamental right, with 93% viewing them as essential compared to 83% in the U.S.
  • Hong Kong: Respondents in Hong Kong often take more days off than allocated, with 15% planning to do so again in 2024, the highest globally.

Melanie Fish, head of Expedia Group brands public relations, emphasizes the need for Americans to adopt better time-off strategies from other countries. She suggests spreading PTO throughout the year or prioritizing rest during vacations to break the habit of not using available time off.
