MIAMI, May 24, 2024 — Colombia has solidified its reputation as the premier destination for birdwatching by recording an impressive 1,558 species during the Global Big Day event.
This achievement reaffirms Colombia’s unparalleled biodiversity, placing it ahead of notable competitors like Peru, Brazil, Ecuador, and India.
Global Big Day, organized by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, invites bird enthusiasts worldwide to observe and document bird species within a single day.

This event aims to collect crucial data on bird distribution and abundance via the eBird platform, aiding conservation and scientific research efforts. Since 2017, Colombia has consistently led the rankings, except in 2021, showcasing its rich avian diversity.
Carmen Caballero, President of ProColombia, emphasized the country’s dedication to preserving its natural wealth. “Our exceptional performance reflects Colombia’s commitment to conservation and strengthens our position as a global birdwatching leader.
We welcome nature enthusiasts to explore our diverse landscapes and extraordinary biodiversity,” she stated.
Significant contributions came from the departments of Antioquia, Meta, Valle del Cauca, Putumayo, and Cundinamarca, highlighting the vital role of biological diversity across Colombia’s six tourist regions.
ProColombia partnered with the USAID Destination Nature program for this year’s event, promoting the slogan “Gossip flies because birds have much to tell us” to encourage widespread participation from both experts and amateurs.
Julián Guerrero, Director of the USAID Destination Nature Program, celebrated the achievement. “Ranking first again in bird species spotted demonstrates growing engagement in these citizen science initiatives and increasing awareness among Colombians about the importance of conserving our biodiversity and natural habitats,” Guerrero remarked.
Colombia’s success in Global Big Day not only underscores its leadership in birdwatching but also enhances its global image as a destination rich in natural wonders and committed to environmental preservation.
