Britain’s New Roller Coaster Breaks Unwanted Record

Thorpe Park’s Hyperia Roller Coaster Closure

Thorpe Park announced on its social media today that the new Hyperia roller coaster will be closed at least until Wednesday.

Official Statement

“Due to unforeseen circumstances, we are unable to open Hyperia between Sunday 26th-Wednesday 29th May. We will update our ride availability page with the latest information regarding the opening of Hyperia beyond the 29th May.

“We apologize for the disappointment this will cause and we are working hard to reopen Hyperia as soon as possible and will keep people updated via our website and social media.”

About Hyperia

Hyperia, a Mack Rides Hypercoaster, set records as Britain’s tallest and fastest roller coaster. Unfortunately, it now holds an unwelcome record for the shortest run before an extended downtime.

This situation mirrors that of Cedar Point’s Top Thrill 2, which also faced early closure after a highly anticipated debut.

Comparison with Top Thrill 2

Top Thrill 2 opened officially on May 4 but closed just one week later. Hyperia did not last even that long, shutting down the day after it opened to the public. As Top Thrill 2 remains closed, the duration of Hyperia’s downtime is yet to be determined.

UK Coaster Enthusiast’s Perspective

Even if the reopening of Hyperia takes a bit longer, it’s encouraging to see that the UK now has two modern coasters focused on airtime and hangtime rather than just positive G inversions—first Icon and now Hyperia.

As a UK coaster enthusiast, I enjoy visiting Alton Towers and Blackpool Pleasure Beach. However, I prefer roller coasters with comfortable lap bars and exciting airtime and hangtime.

These types of rides are plentiful in the USA and mainland Europe but are scarce in the UK. Hopefully, Hyperia will provide the intense airtime I crave without needing to travel to the Netherlands, Ohio, or other distant locations.
